MAY 2025 pRAYER & fASTING

Every Wednesday for the month of May (7th, 14th,
21st and 28th), we will be fasting (from all food and
drinking only water) and praying from 6am – 12pm.
If you have a medical reason for not abstaining from
food during these times, then find a different way to
fast.

Do you need to eat a little something to take
medicine? Do that and then abstain. Is abstaining
from food not possible for you? Abstain from
something else (the internet, television, etc.) Just
abstain from something that you enjoy so that you
can focus on the Lord and your time of prayer.

what is fasting?

  • A practice of willfully making ourselves weak in order to
access the grace and power of God (2 Corinthians
    12:9-10)
  • A way to cultivate a greater hunger for the Lord by
decreasing our reliance on food and other creature
    comforts. (Deuteronomy 8:3, Matthew 4:4)
  • An act of humility and brokenness before the Lord (1
    Peter 5:5)
  • A spiritual discipline that Jesus practiced and expected
His followers to practice after He ascended to Heaven
    (Matthew 6:16, Matthew 9:15)
  • A means to imitate Christ and take part in the fellowship
    of His sufferings (Philippians 3:10-14)

what fasting is not

  • A substitute for repentance from sin and obedience to
    the Lord (Isaiah 58:3-7)
  • A means to show others how holy we are (Matthew 6:16)
  • A way to manipulate God to get Him to do what we
    want.

How to join?

Our church will be open every Wednesday from 6am
until noon if you’d like to stop in and pray. Drop in,
pray while you can, and then head off to wherever
you need to be. If you can’t come to the church to
pray, that’s okay too, just find a dedicated time to
devote in prayer and pray wherever you are!
We have seen God do amazing things through
prayer and fasting.

We hope you’ll participate and
see what God does during this season. Who knows?
Your prayer and fasting testimony just might be one
of those “amazing things” that God does in this season!

Answer: Start slowly, but make your sacrifice meaningful.
Consider what appetites you have that are the most
difficult for you to consider giving up. Start there. You may
want to begin with a partial food fast, say sunup to
sundown, drinking only water. When you complete your
fasting period(s), ease back into eating with easy-to-digest
foods, such as broths, smoothies, fruits and vegetables.

Answer: Be intentional. Discipline does not happen by
accident. Create an environment that supports your fast. If
you’re fasting from food, for example, consider removing
foods that might be a temptation from your home or from
your view. Change your routines to make space for your
fast. Plan to fill the times you would normally eat or
prepare food with prayer, worship, and Bible reading. If
you’re fasting from social media, delete the apps from
your devices. Set a plan and be intentional about “making
yourself hungry,” by abstaining from the things you’ve
chosen to give up. Then, be intentional about satisfying
your hunger with spiritual things and expect the Lord to
meet you. Share your plan with your community; tell your
Discipleship Group or other Believers who can help
encourage and hold you accountable.

Answer: As soon as you realize it, stop. Acknowledge what
happened to the Lord. Consider sharing it with your
community (James 5:16). Accept the grace of God
(Romans 8:1). Don’t wallow, don’t quit, and don’t wait. Get
up and start again. (Proverbs 24:16).

Answer: Hungry, tired, and possibly agitated or cranky at
first. This is normal and it means that you’re doing exactly
what you should be doing. Increase your water intake. You
may have to pause and pray multiple times a day to get
through it (that’s a good thing!). Trust the Lord – His grace
is sufficient for you. His strength is made perfect in your
weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). He can and will sustain you.
Over time, fasting becomes easier and you’ll feel less
uncomfortable. Just keep going! When you complete this
fast, consider fasting regularly. As disciples, we want to live
fasted lives, in which none of our appetites become our
god. (Philippians 3:19).
